Last Friday, April 29th, Sotheby's New York held an auction of post-war and contemporary art featuring many Guy Hepner artists and recorded outstanding results. As expected, the Pop Art genre rose to the occasion. This past week's showing proved the demand for Pop Art continues to match exactly what is available.
Two artists represented by Guy Hepner, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, continue to define the period. These artists maintained a dominating portion of the lots. Lichtenstein's Forms in Space went for a solid $52,500.
Andy Warhol's results were even more impressive. Estimated to sell for $120,000-$150,000, Warhol's cool toned Marilyn (F. & S. 11.24) went for an impressive $206,500. The artist's Flash Series-November 22, 1963 (F. & S. 11.32-42) is comprised of 11 screenprints in colors. This collection sold for $98,500, which is over double of what was expected. Though not in mint condition, Warhol's famous soup can image, Tomato (F. & S. 11.46) still hit a high of $43,750.
While we are featuring Warhol's Mick Jagger, another piece from the series went for a premium of $56,250, and the colorful Rebel Without a Cause hit $92,500.
An insatiable demand for Pop Art exists and continues to expand the contemporary art market.
