Pop Art Market Stronger Than Ever
Nov 15th, 2010

Last Wednesday evening, November 10th, Christie's New York held an auction of post-war and contemporary art featuring many Guy Hepner artists and recorded oustanding results. Once again, the art world was reminded exactly why the genre was originally deemed 'Popular' art: This past week's showing proved the demand for Pop Art continues to match exactly what is available.

Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, two artists that defined the period, both represented by Guy Hepner, comprised a dominating portion of the lots, and with good reason:

Each work that went to auction by Andy Warhol sold. Warhol's piece, "Big Campbell's Soup Can with Can Opener (Vegetable)," reached an incredible $23,882,500, while his "Marilyn," (pictured below), climbed to $4,450,5000. "Jackie," went for $1,650,500, "Dance Diagram," hit $1,538,500, and "Dennis Hopper," hit $965,500.

Roy Lichtenstein's results were no less impressive. The apathetic red-head in Lichtenstein's "Ohhh...Alright," from 1964 broke a record for the artist at $42,642,500 while one of Lichtenstein's later works, a fragmented thinker, and "Dennis Hopper," hit $965,500.

An insatiable demand for Pop Art exists and continues to expand the contemporary art market.

Warhol Paintings: Flowers
Nov 01th, 2010

Andy Warhol changed art forever. He is an undeniable, defining feature of modern art history, and his work is prized as a pivotal and necessary feature at Guy Hepner. His Flower Paintings series comes late in his life, and offers an expanse of insight into a legend's artistic mind through a seemingly mundane subject.

The idea to paint flowers as the subject of a major series was apparently suggested to Warhol by Henry Geldzahler, then curator at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. To some degree, the pictures belong to a long art historical tradition of still-life painting.

"With the Flowers, Andy was just trying a different subject matter. In a funny way, he was kind of repeating the history of art. It was like, now we're doing my Flower period! Like Monet's water lilies, Van Gogh's flowers, the genre." (Gerard Malanga as cited in A Year in the Life of Andy Warhol, New York 2003, p. 74).

The Flowers paintings followed Warhol's Death and Disaster series of 1962-1963--sensational images of electric chairs, suicides and horrendous car-crashes. While the Flowers can be seen as the vacuous flip-side of this horror and violence, there are some critics who believe that they are still permeated by Warhol's deep obsession with death. "What is incredible about the best of the flower paintings (especially the large ones) is that they present a distillation of much of the strength of Warhol's art--the flash of beauty that suddenly becomes tragic under the viewer's gaze. The garish and brilliantly colored flowers always gravitate toward the surrounding blackness and finally end up in a sea of morbidity. No matter how much one wishes these flowers to remain beautiful they perish under one's gaze, as if haunted by death." (J. Coplans, "Andy Warhol: The Art", Andy Warhol, exh. cat., Pasadena Art Museum, 1970, p.52).

NEW Artist: FC SOFIA
Nov 01th, 2010

Guy Hepner is thrilled to announce the new representation of Neo Pop artist, FC SOFIA.

Artist FC SOFIA's discourse is situated at the crossroads between Pop Art and the Nouveaux RĂ©alistes. Like the latter, they use objects lifted from the reality of their time, and do so thanks to a new and hyperactive tool: the Internet; a veritable global supermarket of raw material at their disposal for their works. This progressive approach has situated FC SOFIA at the top of the art market, and an exciting addition to Guy Hepner.

FC SOFIA creaties a union of both art and symbol, producing works that are in direct reference to the myths of consumerism, luxury and fashion, then playing on form and void the better to express the alienation provoked by accumulation at all cost. Each FC SOFIA work screams an integration of pop and visual culture, underscored with an associated commentary on the cult of consumerism and many other facets of modern society.

The couple, Catherine and Frederic, currently lives and works in Paris as one of the hottest artists on the market and at Guy Hepner. If ever there was way to reinvent popular art themes in a consumer society, FC SOFIA has found it. Soon to be on view at Guy Hepner, FC SOFIA offers an true originality in every sense of the world, while still rooted in a modern context.

Chris Bracey: Record Price at London Auction
Oct 18th, 2010

Chris Bracey, one of the most in demand artists at Guy Hepner, went to auction last Saturday at Sotheby's in London with outsanding results.

Bracey's neon 'light art' installations are bold in experience; a product of a man enchanted with the possibilities of light expression. As one of the hottest and most promising new artists discovered, his neon signs have been commissioned by the biggest directors and featured in many films.

His work, "Seduce Me," went to auction this past weekend during London's Frieze Week, and reached an impressive $28,000, outperforming several blue chip artists in the same sale.

Bracey's results prove that despite the current economic state, Guy Hepner's artists are still outperforming the market and setting constant records. After Gavin Bond, Alex Cao, and Russell Young, Chris Bracey is the fourth artist represented by Guy Hepner to set a record at auction during October.

Chris Bracey's new body of work, "The Seven Deadly SIns," will be exhibited and available at Guy Hepner in November, at a date soon to be announced.

David Drebin Shows in Stolkholm Museum
Sep 13th, 2010

Guy Hepner proudly announces the showing of a selection of fashion photography by David Drebin in a Stolkholm museums' fall exhibition.

When an exclusive European museum decides to open an exhibit spanning the history and development of fashion photography through the years, the presence of certain photographer's work becomes indispensible in order to fully represent the genre. David Drebin is one of those photographers.Below is Drebin's work entitled, "Over the Top," which is part of the fall show.

Fotografiska Museet, an important museum in Stolkhom, Sweden devoted to the representation and exhibition of contemporary photography, anticipates the opening of its exhibition enititled 'Fashion!' on September 24th. The show will run through January 2nd of next year, and has selected only 50 of the world's most renowned fashion photographers to form a compilation of 200 hundred photographs.

The exhibition is said to the be one of the most comprehensive exhibitions in Europe to date, stacked with the biggest names in fashion photography over the past century. Including artists from Man Ray, to Tina Berning and Esther Haase, each photographer and piece represented is vital to the accurate depiction of such a broadly spanned genre.

In such a concentrated and exclusive exhibiton, it is no surprise that both David Drebin and Russell James, two artists proudly represented by Guy Hepner, will be on view in the 'Fashion!' exhibition. Drebin's piece "Over the Top" is part of his newly released collection, 'Self Indulgence.' Below is the work, "Waiting for the Call," part of the collection now on view at Guy Hepner.

The Mona Lisa, Blue Boy and The Last Supper

GUY HEPNER PRESENTS JASON ALPER’S
“Proletarian Drift and the Enfranchisement of the Bourgeoisie in the 21st Century”

Opening Reception September 25, 2010, 7-10 p.m.

LOS ANGELES – Sept 2, 2010 – Irreverent self-confessed “rookie” artist Jason Alper is at it again—only this time, he’s taking on Da Vinci. “Proletarian Drift and the Enfranchisement of the Bourgeoisie in the 21st Century” features eight new oils in which Alper—co-creator of the Ali G, Borat and Bruno characters with Sacha Baron Cohen—superimposes one of the best-known logos of our time on some of the best-known artworks on the planet. Picture a Louis Vuitton-branded tablecloth adorning Leonardo Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”, for example.

Alper’s wry fusion of contemporary and classic icons explores notions of familiarity, over-exposure, and authorship, served up with the fearless humor that has characterized his work as a costume designer (who could forget Borat’s neon mankini?). These latest works elaborate on themes explored in Alper’s April show, “It’s All Back On”, which completely sold out despite being the artist’s first art show.

“Proletarian Drift and the Enfranchisement of the Bourgeoisie in the 21st Century” presents a rare opportunity for serious collectors and fans to take another glimpse inside the mind of a true maverick. “It’s quite simple. The art world has forgotten about humor and irony. Shouldn’t all of this be fun? I’m simply trying to make people smile when they see my work,” says Alper. A series of limited edition screenprints will also be available for purchase.

“Brilliant use of logos…Alper cleverly but reverently mixes luxury brands and fine art.”
--Vogue
“Alper has put (Sacha Baron-Cohen) in all sorts of outrageous get-ups — now he is ribbing the art world in a similar way.”
--New York Times
“The man who created Bruno’s anatomically correct bull costume is definitely going for laughs.”
--LA Times

The opening reception takes place on September 25, 2010, 7-10 p.m. at Guy Hepner, 300 N. Robertson Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90048. Jason Alper will be present, and available for interview.

About the Artist
Jason Alper was born and raised in England. A cockney boy who was inspired after exploring the thriving fashion and art scenes that London had to offer. Schooled in art history by his father, he developed a passion for classical and baroque artists whose works he would see hanging in the art musuems of London. “My main influences were my family. We had a couple of Canalettos in the house; my aunt had a series of Gainsboroughs, and my nan had a Caravaggio.” As a means of paying homage to his favorite artists, he decided to “improve” their paintings a little bit. “I’m not laughing at the art world, far from it,” Alper explains. “If anything, I’d like the art world to be the one that’s laughing, or at least smiling. It’s time for everyone to loosen up. This is supposed to be just fun.”
