Contemporary Auction Results

Last week, Sotheby's, Christie's, and Phillips de Pury held auctions for contemporary art, and once again the market proved to be competitive. As usual, results progressively increased.  Buyers remained cautious early on, and became more ambitious as the events advanced thoughout the week. The highs were not suprising, with Guy Hepner artists, Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons among others being primary targets.

Andy Warhol's most impressive piece, was by far "Self Portrait," which had also recently become available from a private collection. As one of Warhol's most recognizable images, the piece was estimated to sell for $30 million but surpassed this expectation when it went for $38.4 million. Jeff Koons' "Pink Panther" was right on target, going for $20 million.

An unfamiliar Mark Rothko piece also projected high results; "Untitled No 17" was expected to go for $22 million and instead climbed to $33.6 million. Anselm Kiefer's "To the Unknown Painter" also suprassed its estimate of two to three million when it whent for $3.4 million.

A few artists achieved record highs, such as Urs Fischer an John Chamberlain. Fischer's Lamp/Bear reached $6.8 million, while Chamberlain's "Nutcracker" went for $4.78 million.

With high expectations from buyers and sellers alike, such results validate an unsatiable desire for pop and contemporary art.
