New from MBW

Street artist Tierry Guetta, better known as Mr. Brainwash, has released a new print in an edition of 125. Juxtapose is a seventeen color screenprint with notable caricatured appearances by Madonna,  JFK, Elvis,  and Britney, with the headliners being Chaplin and Einstein. Most of this imagery is recognizably Brainwash, and we have seen many of the portraits in this particular piece as singular prints in the past.

The limited edition print measures 38 by 50 inches and is numbered, signed, and thumb printed by the artist. The print was released by Mr. Brainwash on May 20th, 2011.

Now on View at Guy Hepner West Hollywood

Guy Hepner offers a look at what's now on view at 300 N. Robertson Blvd. Artists Eric Hajjar and Meredith Rose from the Ultravelvet Collection, Russell Young, Warhol, and Banksy all have works on display now at Guy Hepner in West Hollywood.

Exclusive to Guy Hepner, the Ultravelvet Collection's newest series, High Rollers, pushes boundaries with color while acknowledging popular monetary and rock icons. On a large scale, the digitized photographs are as unforgettable as the figures they represent.

A variety of Russell Young's work is now on view at Guy Hepner. New up-close images of Marilyn Monroe as well as James Dean take the heart of West Hollywood back to the classic era, while creating a sense of glamour with Russell Young's favored Diamond Dust.

Contemporary favorite, Andy Warhol is always on our mind here at Guy Hepner, as is street artist, Banksy. Our newest addition pays homage to art great, Haring, in Choose Your Weapon.

Contemporary Auction Results

Last week, Sotheby's, Christie's, and Phillips de Pury held auctions for contemporary art, and once again the market proved to be competitive. As usual, results progressively increased.  Buyers remained cautious early on, and became more ambitious as the events advanced thoughout the week. The highs were not suprising, with Guy Hepner artists, Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons among others being primary targets.

Andy Warhol's most impressive piece, was by far "Self Portrait," which had also recently become available from a private collection. As one of Warhol's most recognizable images, the piece was estimated to sell for $30 million but surpassed this expectation when it went for $38.4 million. Jeff Koons' "Pink Panther" was right on target, going for $20 million.

An unfamiliar Mark Rothko piece also projected high results; "Untitled No 17" was expected to go for $22 million and instead climbed to $33.6 million. Anselm Kiefer's "To the Unknown Painter" also suprassed its estimate of two to three million when it whent for $3.4 million.

A few artists achieved record highs, such as Urs Fischer an John Chamberlain. Fischer's Lamp/Bear reached $6.8 million, while Chamberlain's "Nutcracker" went for $4.78 million.

With high expectations from buyers and sellers alike, such results validate an unsatiable desire for pop and contemporary art.

Pop Art dominates at Auction

Last Friday, April 29th, Sotheby's New York held an auction of post-war and contemporary art featuring many Guy Hepner artists and recorded outstanding results. As expected, the Pop Art genre rose to the occasion. This past week's showing proved the demand for Pop Art continues to match exactly what is available.
Two artists represented by Guy Hepner, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, continue to define the period. These artists maintained a dominating portion of the lots. Lichtenstein's Forms in Space went for a solid $52,500.
Andy Warhol's results were even more impressive. Estimated to sell for $120,000-$150,000, Warhol's cool toned Marilyn (F. & S. 11.24) went for an impressive $206,500. The artist's Flash Series-November 22, 1963 (F. & S. 11.32-42) is comprised of 11 screenprints in colors. This collection sold for $98,500, which is over double of what was expected. Though not in mint condition, Warhol's famous soup can image, Tomato (F. & S. 11.46) still hit a high of $43,750.

While we are featuring Warhol's Mick Jagger, another piece from the series went for a premium of $56,250, and the colorful Rebel Without a Cause hit $92,500.
An insatiable demand for Pop Art exists and continues to expand the contemporary art market.
