Jean-Michel Basquiat Prints; The Complete Series
Jean-Michel Basquiat was a young graffiti artist known in the 1970's and 1980's New York steet scene for his punk-inspired, collage imagery. Beginning his career by spray painting local Manhattan buildings, Basquiat became a prominent figure in art culture and immediately received nation-wide acclaim as a neo-expressionist artist. During his short life, he produced controversial paintings and prints that acknowledged topics of heritage and society, and was known for his use of scribbled pseudonyms. Entire portfolios are extremely rare to come by, as only a limited number of them were produced in his lifetime; and while his prints are normally sold as individuals, we have acquired complete estate portfolios that are in pristine condition. Such desirable works as Cabeza, Charles the First, and Ernok, are just a few of the pieces that have become available.
In these paintings Basquiat challenges ideas of race in addition to making references to his intrapersonal relationships. This often appears as chaotic "doodles" of words and outlines of images. The troubled young artist's works remain some of the most remembered graffiti pieces of our time.
