Andy Warhol: Dollar Signs

Guy Hepner is pleased to present a rare selection of Andy Warhol’s Dollar Signs from a private collection. This collection includes, single, quad and original Dollar Signs on paper.

The Dollar Signs are among Warhol’s most commanding and influential images. Warhol focused on his favorite commodity in the early 1980s when he isolated the dollar sign, reinterpreting it in a rough, sketchy manner. Warhol displayed his gift for satire with these brilliant, colorful depictions of the most obvious symbol for money and wealth.

Andy Warhol: "I like money on the wall. Say you were going to buy a $200,000 painting. I think you should take that money, tie it up, and hang it on the wall. Then when someone visited you, the first thing they would see is the money on the wall."

Warhol’s bold commentary on the relationship between art and money is a wry reminder of the power, influence and scale of today’s art market. In late 2009, Andy Warhol's 200 One Dollar Bills broke records at auction; proving that the art world enthusiastically embraces his sardonic examination of art as a commodity.

David LaChapelle: Deluge

Guy Hepner is pleased to present three pieces from David LaChapelle’s Deluge series. A private collector has deaccessioned these incredible works from one of LaChapelle’s most sought after bodies of work.

David LaChapelle’s Deluge series is inspired by works of the Mannerist and Baroque masters—from Michelangelo to Caravaggio and Bernini. Their influence is made clear by LaChapelle’s dramatic use of lighting and religious imagery; the theatricality and vivid colors heighten the intensity and impact. LaChapelle’s keen eye for stark, evocative landscapes has already elicited strong emotional responses.

LaChapelle's Deluge series is a metaphorical representation of civilization’s general tendency toward decadence and decay. It’s for this reason that the images aren’t spontaneous or random; everything is posed by LaChapelle with a precise art historical, cultural, or religious reference in mind.

Now on View

Guy Hepner’s January 2010 program includes an extensive repertoire of works from established and emerging artists.

An installation from the promising young artist, Jorge Oswaldo, is now on display in the Los Angeles gallery. Oswaldo’s three-dimensional handmade designs have been warmly received by critics and collectors.

Damien Hirst explores the uncertainty of the core human experience: love, life and death using unconventional and often controversial media. Hirst’s hauntingly beautiful piece All You Need is Love, Love, Love (Diamond Dust), will be available to view this month.

Guy Hepner’s expansive Warhol inventory now includes a trio of Mao portraits. Some of Andy Warhol’s most desired images, the Mao portraits are rarely seen in groups. When viewed together, the pieces have a singular effect.

From January 14th to 17th, Guy Hepner will be a major exhibitor at one of the world’s preeminent art fairs, Photo LA. The exhibition will showcase the debut of celebrated photographer Tony Duran’s newest series The Porn Room. This collection affords the viewer with a sense of vicarious involvement in Duran’s hedonistic and decadent imagination.

2010 Preview

2010 Preview

Jan 04th, 2010

2010 marks the start of an exciting period of expansion and development for Guy Hepner. There will be a continued focus on blue chip works of art by pop artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, including the move into original works on paper and canvas.

Coupled with this step into the more discerning collecting fields, will be expanded availability of works on canvas by contemporary painters Russell Young and French impresario Philippe Huart, enabling a roster and programme more balanced in overall mediums and styles.

The fashion photography field will continue to be supported at the highest level, the gallery continuing to represent and publish work with the world's top photographers. This exiting program will commence January 14th with the Vernissage Opening of Photo LA. As one of the largest exhibitors at the West Coast's premier exhibit for photography, Guy Hepner will present a single artist installation, "The Porn Room" by Tony Duran, a dark and decadent expose of hard living and exuberance.

Guy Hepner looks forward to your attendance at one of the upcoming events, while appointments are available 7 days a week at the flagship store in Los Angeles for private viewing and discussing your collecting needs.

Warhol Late Paintings

Andy Warhol created more art during the 1980s than any other point in his prolific career. For the first time in twenty years, Warhol returned to painting, developing an extraordinary vocabulary of images and techniques, thus revealing his full potential and artistic genius.

Andy Warhol’s late period was characterized by a burst of artistic innovation and production. Those surrounding Warhol during this time remarked on his tremendous vitality and enthusiasm as he re-immersed himself in painting. Warhol embraced each new idea passionately, working tirelessly on his many projects.

Warhol’s series of Black & White Ads (1985-86) demonstrates his overwhelming desire to address subject matter of strong personal meaning and significance. For this series, Warhol scanned Pop images from newspapers and magazines, representing current popular culture, as well as issues he found to be personally significant. In addition to reproducing ads for products such as the now infamous Campbell’s Soup Can and other current fads, Warhol included sociopolitical commentaries in this collection. He explored all major issues at the time from the growing deficit under Reagan, to the increasing threat of nuclear holocaust and global militarism. Warhol also revealed his deep religious beliefs with incisive works such as, Heaven and Hell Are Just One Breath Away! and Repent and Sin No More!

Warhol’s desire to imbue his late works with great significance was an ambition he had retained from early in his career. Yet he was not able to fully realize this aspiration until he returned to painting during the final decade of his life.
